Next-Generation Genomic Sequencing: Market Evaluation
A Panel Discussion Among Genomic Sequencing Experts
Deliverable: Transcript with key findings
Study Description and Objectives
To assess potential future uptake of the Illumina 1G Genome Analyzer (using Solexa sequencing technology) and the competitive environment developing in the ‘next-generation sequencing’ space
§ From current Illumina/Solexa users, determine:
· Drivers of initial adoption
· Current utilization and applications
· Levels of satisfaction with the product/technology
· Strengths and weaknesses of the product
· Appetite for additional purchases
§ From those (e.g., core labs and smaller academic centers) evaluating the Illumina/Solexa product and others, determine:
· Existing platforms now in use
· Barriers to adoption
· Specific competing products under consideration
· Purchasing criteria
· Purchasing timelines
§ From all participants, explore the attributes, merits, and demerits of competing products, including:
· Applied Biosystems SOLiD system (now in market via “early access program”)
· 454 Life Sciences sequencer (marketed by Roche Diagnostics)
· Helicos Biosciences tSMS platform
§ Explore specific additional issues, including:
· Thoughts on the potential for de novo sequencing using Illumina/Solexa, others
· Time horizon for single-molecule sequencing, and who will get there first
· Potential for longer read lengths being accommodated by any of the competitors
· The future of capillary sequencing
· Other competing technologies not previously discussed
