Study Description and Objectives

Panel Intelligence engaged a set of two hematologists, five cardiologists, and two interventional cardiologists in an online panel to discuss recent data about anticoagulants and antiplatelet agents to be used in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome, atrial fibrillation, and deep vein thrombosis. Secondary objectives of this study included the following:

§    Review recent data from the ATLAS trial presented at AHA 2008 and compare it to data on Schering Plough’s SCH 530348, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer’s apixaban, and Eisai’s E5555

§    Assess the strengths/weaknesses of and expectations for the following medications in the treatment of atrial fibrillation and DVT prevention following orthopedic surgery:

·     Bayer’s Xarelto® (rivaroxaban; Factor Xa inhibitor)

·     Portola’s betrixaban (Factor Xa inhibitor)

·     Schering Plough’s SCH 530348 (thrombin receptor antagonist)

·     Eisai’s E5555 (thrombin receptor antagonist)

·     Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer’s apixaban (Factor Xa inhibitor)

·     Boehringer-Ingelheim’s dabigatran (a direct thrombin inhibitor)

§    Discuss the potential for dabigatran’s approval for atrial fibrillation and how it might impact the use  of Factor Xa inhibitors in this space

§    Determine the important of being first-to-market in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome and atrial fibrillation and evaluate the factors involved in changing patients to a new therapy once it is approved
